SAF financing models

Innovative financing models for the market ramp-up of sustainable aviation fuels

Electricity-based synthetic fuels are an important element for the defossilization of aviation. For example, the power-to-liquid (PtL) process produces liquid aviation fuels from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. When these Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are burned, only as much CO2 is released as was absorbed during production.

In addition to the limited availability of sustainable biomass and additional renewable energy, the major challenges for the market ramp-up include the high costs of SAF. They are still many times higher than for fossil kerosene.

Together with representatives from politics, administration, the financial sector, aviation, industry, research and associations, we explored the questions of how private and state capital can finance the SAF market ramp-up in Germany and beyond, what challenges and hurdles exist, particularly from a regulatory perspective, and how SAF can become more attractive for manufacturers, airlines and investors.

To this end, innovative approaches were discussed that can help overcome market barriers with the help of state-private financing that complies with EU law, including the double auction model from H2Global and the SWAP model that CENA Hessen designed together with RheinMain University of Applied Sciences.
